Unique experience of Villa Mayer and the Museum of Leather in Slovenia
August 2, 12 p.m., in Sostanj
Villa Mayer, the building of the Municipality of Šoštanj, is a typical example of bourgeois architecture of late historicism. It was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was erected by lawyer Dr. Fran Mayer, a longtime mayor of Shoshtany during the World Wars. Since 2002, she has owned the Villa Municipality of Šoštanj, which renovated the villa in 2009 and established permanent collections of cultural heritage, which are on display to the public.
Leather industry has traditionally been an important craft in Slovenia over the centuries. With the development of industrialization, in some places this craft grew to an industrial level and in the 20th century represented an important branch of the economy. Due to the leather crisis, most leather industrial plants collapsed in the second half of the 20th century.
