More about Kavčnik’s homestead

The Kavčnik homestead in Zavodnje is the pearl of rural architecture in Slovenia and the southernmost preserved Alpine chimney in the European area. These types of buildings dominated most of our space from the 11th century to the end of the 18th century, when the authorities began to vigorously prosecute them because of the high risk of fires. They were replaced by more modern-style buildings with a so-called “black kitchen”.

Today’s building was created as a result of various prehealings and dosages and consists of several essentially autonomous volumes in the queue. The oldest part of the homestead is a chimney, about 400 years old. Small windows on the chimney cell, the ski mechanism, as well as the details of the wooden hinges on the front door of the shed, testify that the core of the building with the shed was probably formed in the 17th century. At that time, the chimney cell was the only living room of the Kavčnik homestead.

The museum’s presentation of the chimney house is set to give visitors the feeling that there are still people living there, as the fire flutters on the fire on a daily basis and even smoke still freely in the area today.
